WebP to BMP Converter
Convert a WebP image into a Windows BMP bitmap. WebP was invented to make web images as small as possible; BMP never compressed anything at all. So this is the conversion with the most dramatic growth of any common format — about ten times for a photograph, and over a thousand times for a simple graphic in testing. It exists for one situation: an image from the web that has to go into software from before WebP.

Format comparison
WEBP vs BMP
WebP
Lossy or losslessA web format from Google that can work like JPG or like PNG, usually producing a smaller file than either.
- Smaller files than JPG or PNG for most images
- Supported by every current browser
- Some older desktop software and upload forms still reject it
BMP (Windows Bitmap)
UncompressedAn early Windows format that stores pixels more or less raw, with little or no compression.
- Read by old and embedded software that knows nothing newer
- No compression artefacts
- Very large files for the image size
The two ends of image compression
WebP was released in 2010 with one goal: smaller images, so web pages load faster. It uses techniques borrowed from video compression and does its job very well.
BMP arrived with Windows in 1985 and stores three bytes for every pixel, uncompressed. Its size depends on nothing but its width and height.
Converting from one to the other throws away every byte WebP saved. Measured:
- A photograph: 35 KB as WebP → 360 KB as BMP. About ten times.
- A simple graphic, stored as lossless WebP: 638 bytes → 720 KB. Over a thousand times.
The graphic grows so spectacularly because lossless WebP is extraordinarily good at flat colour — it described a 600 × 400 image in fewer bytes than this paragraph — while the bitmap still has to spell out all 240,000 pixels individually.
Lossy WebP: the artefacts come too
Most WebP images on the web are lossy. Converting to BMP does not recover what WebP discarded; it records the decoded image exactly, softened detail and all. The bitmap is larger, not better.
Why you probably have a WebP
Saving an image from a website increasingly produces a .webp file, because sites
serve WebP to browsers that support it. You never chose the format — and then the application you
need it in has never heard of it.
What happens to transparent pixels when converting WEBP to BMP?
BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent areas are blended onto a solid background before the file is saved — the colour you choose above, #FFFFFF by default. Keep your original WEBP if you may need the transparency again.
Quality
Quality and file size
There is no quality setting. BMP is uncompressed and records the decoded WebP exactly.
Transparency is flattened onto your colour
WebP supports full transparency; a standard BMP holds none. Transparent and partly-transparent areas are blended onto the background colour you choose, so soft edges fade into it correctly — but the colour is now part of the image.
Pick the colour the image will actually sit on. The older software that reads BMP often mishandles bitmap transparency, sometimes showing it as black, so an explicit colour is the reliable choice.
Animated WebP becomes one frame
WebP can animate; a BMP cannot hold more than one image. You get the first frame, and when the WebP had more, the tool counts them and says so rather than handing over a single frame as if nothing were missing.
If you need the animation in a widely supported format, WebP to GIF keeps it moving.
Could you use something smaller?
If the software you are converting for accepts PNG or JPG, use those instead — both open almost everywhere BMP does:
- WebP to PNG — lossless, keeps transparency, far smaller than BMP.
- WebP to JPG — for photographs, smallest of the compatible options.
When BMP is genuinely needed
- Legacy Windows applications that open bitmaps and nothing newer.
- Embedded displays and controllers without a WebP decoder — which is most of them.
- Older game engines and modding tools expecting bitmap textures.
- Installer and resource tooling that specifies BMP.
- Raw-pixel processing in scientific or industrial software.
Sizes to expect
Because a bitmap is width × height × 3 bytes regardless of content:
- 1200 × 800, a typical large web image — about 2.9 MB.
- 1920 × 1080 — about 6.2 MB.
Worth checking against any size limit in the software you are converting for.
Going the other way
BMP to WebP is the reverse, and for websites one of the most worthwhile conversions there is — a bitmap typically shrinks to a small fraction of its size.
What happens to your file
Browsers cannot write BMP files, so this runs on our server. Your upload is deleted the moment conversion finishes, the result is deleted as you download it, and anything abandoned is swept automatically.
Privacy
What happens to your file
This tool runs on our server, so it works the same on every phone and computer. Your file is uploaded, and this is exactly what happens to it:
- Stored outside the public web root under a random name, never under your file's name.
- Processed, with the original upload deleted immediately — whether it succeeded or failed.
- The result sits behind a signed link that only you receive, which stops working after 20 minutes, and the file is deleted the moment you download it.
- Anything never collected is deleted automatically within 30 minutes.
- The image itself is never logged or kept. If a conversion fails, we record the formats involved and the error — not the file.
- Camera metadata, including any GPS coordinates recording where a photo was taken, is removed from the result. Only the rotation needed to show the image the right way up is kept.
Questions & answers
WebP to BMP: frequently asked questions
Why is the BMP so much larger than my WebP?
WebP exists to make images small; BMP stores three raw bytes per pixel with no compression at all. Measured, a 35 KB WebP photo became a 360 KB BMP — about ten times — and a 638-byte lossless graphic became 720 KB.
Will the BMP look better than the WebP?
No. A lossy WebP has already discarded some detail, and a BMP records the decoded image exactly as it is. The file is larger, not better.
What happens to transparent areas?
They are blended onto the background colour you choose and become part of the image. Soft edges fade into that colour properly. Pick the colour the image will sit on — older software reading BMP often mishandles transparency, sometimes as black.
What about an animated WebP?
A BMP holds one image, so you get the first frame, and the tool tells you when the WebP had more. To keep the animation in a widely supported format, convert to GIF instead.
Why do I have a WebP file at all?
Most likely because you saved it from a website. Sites serve WebP to browsers that support it, so saving an image often gives you a .webp you never chose — and then the application you need it in cannot open it.
Is there a smaller option that still works in old software?
If the software accepts PNG or JPG, use those. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency; JPG is smallest for photographs. Both are far smaller than BMP and open almost everywhere a BMP does.
